Wolf Oven 0821 Error: Upper MDL Relay Short
What Does Wolf Oven Fault Code 0821 Mean? The 0821 fault code on a Wolf M Series wall oven is an upper Multi-Duty Load (MDL) relay short. Wolf uses MDL relays to consolidate switching for several auxiliary loads — cooling fan, door lock motor power, indicator lamps, and similar small components — through a single […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Do not attempt to use the upper cavity while 0821 is present. The MDL relay controls safety-related loads, and operating with a welded MDL relay removes several of Wolf's safety interlocks. Lower cavity on double ovens remains usable if present.
Can I reset the code?
No. This is a hardware-level failure. Breaker resets momentarily clear the latched code but the welded relay remains welded and the fault returns immediately.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Cooling fan runs even with the oven breaker on and no cook command, Upper cavity feels warm with the oven Off.
Symptoms You May Notice
Upper cavity cooling fan runs continuously
The MDL relay switches auxiliary loads including the cooling fan, and a welded MDL leaves the fan running whenever the breaker is on — even with the oven powered off.
Upper cavity feels warm to the touch without any cook program
Auxiliary heat sources fed by the MDL relay stay energized and passively warm the cavity area.
Upper oven refuses to start any cooking mode
The control board detects the MDL relay in the wrong state and locks out upper-cavity operation until the fault is cleared.
Possible Causes
Upper MDL relay contacts welded closed
Normal wear-out failure after years of service — the MDL switches frequently and its contacts eventually fuse.
Requires ProfessionalUpper relay board driver transistor failed
The transistor driving the MDL coil has failed in a way that keeps the coil continuously energized.
Requires ProfessionalShorted load connected to the MDL relay
One of the components fed by the MDL relay has developed a short that back-feeds the monitoring circuit.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Shut off oven power at the breaker
Switch off the dedicated wall oven breaker immediately. A shorted MDL relay keeps auxiliary loads powered at all times, and leaving the oven energized wastes electricity and can damage the stuck components.
The cooling fan may continue to run audibly for a few seconds after the breaker is cut — this is normal as capacitors drain.

2
Listen for continuous auxiliary operation
Before cutting power, note any audible cooling fan running when the oven is turned Off. This information helps the technician confirm which MDL load is affected.
M Series MDL relays handle the cooling fan, door lock motor power, and several auxiliary lamps.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Oven has seen heavy use (8+ years)
- Recent electrical surge or outage
- First MDL-related fault on this oven
