Wolf Range 03 Error: Open Sensor Circuit
What Does Wolf Range Err 03 Mean? The Err 03 code on a Wolf Legacy Dual Fuel Range tells you the control board has detected an open circuit on the RTD oven temperature sensor. RTD stands for Resistance Temperature Detector — it is a precision sensor that reports oven temperature by changing its electrical resistance […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Do not use the oven until the sensor is repaired. Without a valid RTD reading the board cannot regulate cavity temperature, and the safety over-temp logic also depends on the sensor. Surface burners remain safe to use.
Can I reset the code?
No. Err 03 is a physical failure of the sensor or its wiring. A reset will not restore a broken sensor — the error returns the moment the board tries to read the circuit again.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Err 03 appears as soon as you select any cook mode, Oven smells burnt but the display says it is cold.
Symptoms You May Notice
Oven cavity never heats past room temperature
A cook program starts, the display shows the target, but the cavity stays cold and the bake element never energizes.
Preheat indicator chimes immediately or not at all
Without a valid sensor reading, the control logic either short-circuits the preheat wait or stalls waiting for a reading that never comes.
Err 03 appears seconds after selecting any cook mode
The board detects the open circuit the moment it begins polling the sensor at cook start.
Possible Causes
Disconnected RTD sensor connector at the rear of the cavity
The sensor plug has vibrated loose or was bumped during cleaning, breaking the circuit between the sensor body and the control board.
Requires ProfessionalBroken RTD sensor element inside the probe
The thin platinum winding inside the sensor has fractured from thermal cycling or physical impact, showing as infinite resistance.
Requires ProfessionalDamaged sensor harness between the cavity and the board
A wire in the sensor harness has broken or corroded, usually near where it passes through a metal bulkhead.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Reset power at the breaker
Switch off the 40-amp dedicated circuit for 30 seconds, then restore power. A reset will not fix the sensor, but it will confirm whether Err 03 returns immediately or only under load.
Err 03 that appears only after preheat is a different failure mode than Err 03 that appears the moment you press Bake.

2
Inspect visible areas for obvious damage
With the oven cool, open the door and check the upper-rear area of the cavity where the RTD probe mounts. Look for a probe that has been bent sideways by cleaning tools or a rack catching on it.
Never try to re-seat the probe yourself — access to the connector requires removing the rear panel.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Err 03 returns within seconds of a breaker reset
- Oven has recently been moved or had the rear panel removed
- No prior sensor service in 5+ years
